This week we’re off to the most famous region in wine: Bordeaux, France.
Bordeaux was the first region to start producing world-class wines and exporting them successfully. Bordeaux is also famous for blending their varietals together to create a more elegant, complex wine. Because of this, Bordeaux can be some of the most difficult wines to comprehend.
Starting off we’ll try a white which blends Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, and then roll through four reds, blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, from different regions and vintages. We’ll look at different recent vintages and talk about what makes one year age-worthy versus early drinking.
And we’ll of course go through the age-old “right bank” verses “left bank” and who gets to be a “third growth” or “grand cru.” It’s actually the basis for most wine knowledge and I would consider this a very important tasting for budding connoisseurs.
Cheers,
Mike, the wine guy
